Cornelia Walker’s heart for Japan began in elementary school, when she picked Japan for a Girls’ Auxiliary project—because the flag was easy to draw. That simple choice sparked a 40-year journey of loving and serving the Japanese people.
After marrying Carlton, the couple sensed God calling them overseas. When they learned of a need in Japan, they responded, “What about us?” In 1982, they arrived in Tokyo. Carlton said, “It’s going to be one amazing journey.” And it was.
They completed language study, then moved to Hokkaido, where they saw people come to faith, planted a church, and trained young pastors. After 21 years, they moved to Tokyo, later returning to Hokkaido to mentor a new generation of missionaries.
Now, the Walkers rejoice to see God opening doors for new families and singles to serve in Japan. They remain confident: God is still at work.
Through the Cooperative Program, Southern Baptists help send and sustain missionaries like the Walkers.
Pray for new missionaries in Japan and for hearts to be softened to the gospel.
