Statement of the President
Frank Page
calling for prayer for Korean hostages

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

TAYLORS, S.C., May 25, 2007--Most of us have been watching the news in recent days which tells of the South Korean Christian group taken prison by the Taliban in Afghanistan.  Twenty-one South Korean captives remain alive at this point and time.  The Taliban is demanding that the government of Afghanistan meet their demands for the release of these captives.  This group of Christian mission workers was kidnapped on July 19 while traveling by bus.  They are the largest group of foreign hostages taken in Afghanistan thus far.  Two have already been killed.

I call on all Southern Baptists to join in earnest prayer for the release of these mission workers.  We all know that there is risk in speaking for the Lord.  We are all aware that there is risk when one travels in foreign countries.  Though they went against their government's advice in traveling to Afghanistan, I know they went with a sense of calling from the Lord.  While the two who have already been martyred are now enjoying the presence of the Lord, we do pray for the release and safe return of the others so that they will not have to suffer and that their work of sharing Christ can go on.  Yes, we trust the Lord in this situation.  However, as God has given us the privilege of prayer, let us pray that these hostages would be released and that the families of the two already martyred will receive comfort from the Lord's Holy Spirit.

The Southern Baptist Convention is America’s largest evangelical denomination, having more than 16.3 million members in over 43,699 churches nationwide. The Executive Committee is the administrative entity responsible for facilitating the ongoing work of the Convention between annual meetings with offices in Nashville, Tennessee.
