The position of Senior Pastor of Emmanuel Church shall be a full-time, salaried position. The Senior Pastor for Emmanuel Church will be a man who is called, ordained and set apart by God to the gospel ministry, biblically grounded and evangelical in theology and is committed to living and serving in a manner consistent with the standards set forth in Scripture for Pastors and Elders. The Senior Pastor will be one who exemplifies godly character and leadership.
The Senior Pastor shall be recommended to the Church by the Pastoral Search Team and called by a vote of the congregation in accordance with Article II, Section 1 of the Constitution and By-Laws of Emmanuel Church.
In accordance with Article II, Section I of the Church By-Laws, the Senior Pastor’s term of service shall be for an unlimited period of time. Termination of the Senior Pastor’s services shall be by resignation, retirement, or vote to terminate services.
The primary functions of the Senior Pastor are to lead the church in prayer, to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ, and to provide oversight of all ministries in collaboration with the Elder board, church staff, and volunteer leaders.
The Senior Pastor will be called to lead the church to understand, embrace, and accomplish its mission to make disciples both locally and globally through the vision of engaging Christ followers in worship, community, and ministry.
a. Clear testimony of faith in Jesus Christ.
b. Consistent spiritual and moral character and lifestyle, complying with the biblical leadership qualifications of an overseer described in 1 Timothy 3:17 and Titus 1:5-9, as well as the constitution and bylaws of Emmanuel Church.
c. Agreement with the core values of Emmanuel Church.
d. Competent in church leadership, organization, administration and interpersonal relationships
III. Direction and Supervision
a. The Elders shall be the supervisor of record for the senior Pastor
b. The Elders shall review the Senior Pastor’s job performance on an annual basis. The Elders will provide the Senior Pastor a Performance Appraisal interview. A copy of the written Performance Appraisal will be provided to the Senior Pastor at that time. At that interview meeting, the Senior Pastor will present his goals for the coming year. Action on these goals, along with the job description, will serve as the basis for the following year’s performance appraisal.
c. The Elders will perform an annual salary review and make a recommendation to the Church regarding any salary increase
a. Elder/Overseer: the principal leader and vision caster of the church (cf. Acts 20:28; Philippians 1:1; 1 Timothy 3:1-7; Titus 1:5-9; 1 Peter 5:1-4).
i. Will communicate his vision for ministry that God gives to this congregation.
ii. Will lead and develop the pastoral team in equipping the congregation to fulfill the Great Commission and accomplish the Vision Statement and core values of Emmanuel Church.
iii. Shall be an ex-officio member of all organizations and teams and of Emmanuel Church. In this role, the Senior Pastor shall provide council and spiritual guidance, although the organizations and teams shall continue to have the responsibilities of their offices as stated in the Constitution & By-Laws and Church Operations Manual.
iv. Shall nurture the development of the church staff and ministry leaders.
v. Shall conscientiously uphold the constitution and by-laws of the church.
vi. Will make periodic activities and status of ministries reports to the Elder board and shall present an Annual State of the Church report or message to the congregation.
b. Evangelist: models the practice of personal evangelism and ensures that the church is challenged and equipped to be obedient to the Great Commission (cf. 2 Timothy 4:5; Matthew 28:19).
i. Shall proclaim the Gospel with the goal of reaching persons for Christ and fostering their spiritual growth.
ii. Will lead the Church in evangelistic outreach, including Celebrate Recovery.
c. Shepherd: models the heart of the Chief Shepherd and ensures that the church is well led, cared for, and protected (cf. Acts 20:28; 1 Peter 5:1-4).
i. Shall encourage the persons, programs and ministries of the Church.
ii. Shall be available for counseling, on request. In this regard, the Senior Pastor shall maintain the confidentiality of those being counseled within the limitations of moral obligation and the laws of the State of Maryland.
iii. Shall partner with the Deacon team to ensure that the pastoral needs of the church are met, including (but not limited to) care for the sick, the hospitalized, the elderly, and the bereaved, including providing funeral and burial services as requested.
d. Preacher/Teacher: the principal communicator of God’s Word in public worship and ensures that the Church is growing to maturity in Christ (cf. Acts 6:4; Ephesians 4:11; 2 Timothy 4:1-4; Titus 1:9).
i. Will conduct weekly worship services and prayer meetings.
ii. Will preach and teach the Bible, believing that it has God for its author, salvation for its message, and truth without any mixture of error for its matter.
iii. Shall perform weddings and other special ministries.
e. Equipper: partners with other leaders to empower and equip maturing members for significant service and ministry by discovering, developing, and deploying their spiritual gifts (cf. Ephesians 4:12; 2 Timothy 2:2).
i. Will use his spiritual gifts to edify and build the body of believers at Emmanuel Baptist Church.
ii. Will facilitate communications between the staff and the congregation and among church members.
iii. Shall establish a strong relationship with other area churches and organizations throughout the community.
