Today's Devotion

From the Book of Ecclesiastes:

If a man beget an hundred children, and live many years, so that the days of his years be many, and his soul be not filled with good, and also that he have no burial; I say, that an untimely birth is better than he. For he cometh in with vanity, and departeth in darkness, and his name shall be covered with darkness (Eccl. 6:3-4).

In Ecclesiastes chapter five, Solomon praised the person that accepted their lot in life and took their God-given gifts and put them to positive use. In chapter six, he gives the account of a person that never appreciated the gifts that God had given him. Although this man may have never learned to appreciate what he had, he still was not a "bad" person. He lived his life and raised his children; he was not a murderer or a thief. However, Solomon had this to say, There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, and it is common among men (6:1).
