Southern Baptist Convention

Statement of the President
Frank Page
on the New Baptist Covenant Meeting in Atlanta

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

TAYLORS, S.C., January 24, 2008-- Several persons have asked for my reaction to the upcoming meeting in Atlanta called, The New Baptist Covenant Meeting.  This meeting sponsored by former Presidents Carter and Clinton, as well as others, will be meeting soon in Atlanta to join together a host of varying Baptist bodies and individuals.

Early on, I reacted to one of the other organizer's early comments that the primary reason for this meeting was to take the microphone away from conservative Baptists who had held it for too long.  I continue to be concerned as to at least some participants' motives for this event.

However, I have assured President Carter of my prayers for this meeting.  In recent communication, he expressed his deep desire that this meeting be nonpolitical and Christ-honoring.  I always affirm bodies of believers who gather for that reason.  My promise of prayer support continues to be that this meeting will exalt the name of Christ, will point human beings toward the need for a personal relationship with Christ who alone can bring salvation.  At the same time, I urge this meeting to seek to find practical ways that the Gospel might be applied in ministry to precious persons across our nation and world.

Sincerely,
Dr. Frank S. Page
President
Southern Baptist Convention
2006-2008
